Not true ...I have over 50 databases and not one of them is on port
1521.
It all depends on what port you select when you setup listener.ora AND
tnsnames.ora (or Onames, or Connection Manager or whatever you are
using).
Oh and BTW they ALL work thru VPN and firewall as I work from home
100% of the time and our network engineers are notorious for NOT opening
up ports.
I use eXceed telnet and I use ssh for telnet sessions, but for Oracle, I
use a number of graphical tools...SQLNav, Spotlight, OEM, etc etc al of
whch use SQL*NET=20

Tnsping and sqlplus both use port 1521, so if tnsping works, sqlplus=20
should work. The fact that it isn 't working suggests an MTU issue. =20
Look at your ping documentation for your OS for how to increase packet=20
size (on Linux its -s) and try sending some larger ping packets (like=20
500 bytes, 800 bytes, 1200 bytes) and see if they get through. If they=20
don 't, and normal pings do, you need to get your network administrator=20
involved.
